In order to properly treat wastewater, sewage treatment plants (STP) and effluent treatment plants (ETP) rely on a variety of chemicals and media. Coagulants, which help remove suspended particles and organic debris, are often used chemicals in ETPs and STPs. Examples of these chemicals are ferric chloride and aluminum sulfate. To get rid of dangerous germs, disinfectants like UV sterilization or chlorine are also used. Sand, gravel, and activated carbon are examples of media that are used in filtration procedures to assist remove more contaminants from water before it is discharged or used again.
